East/WOIS remains perfect after playoff win

If anyone was looking for upsets during the Section V Football Tournament quarterfinals, they found a couple of treats.
- The Eastridge Lancers might have pulled off the biggest shocker. The Class A2 No. 6 seed edged No. 3 Greece Athena 50-48.
- Brockport won a No. 5 versus No. 4 game 34-21 at Irondequoit. So did Churchville-Chili, which knocked out Spencerport.
- East High/World of Inquiry, the team to beat in Class A2, held down No. 8 seed Wilson/Early College and won 50-8. This was the final game for Greg Mortier as Wilson/Early College coach.
- Hilton, the No. 2 seed in Class A1 behind Webster Schroeder, ran past No. 7 Gates Chili 45-14.
- Undefeated Batavia, No. 1 in Class B, and No. 3 Honeoye Falls-Lima comfortably won opening round playoff games. No. 2 Monroe (6-2) plays on Saturday.
- Manny Sepulveda broke a Section V record during East Rochester/Gananda’s Class C rout.

Section V Class AA Quarterfinals: Top players, performances Friday
Matt Buttarazzi: Fairport’s senior linebacker had 11 tackles and a sack. Cam Lauf had 11 tackles during a 52-20 loss at UPrep.
Dekhari Carter: UPrep’s linebacker had nine tackles, two hurries and forced a fumble during a 52-20 win over Fairport. Devon Farley had a sack, tackle for loss and a hurry.

Chris Jean: UPrep’s running back had 14 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a 35-yard touchdown reception, during a 52-20 win over Fairport.
Jackson Koppers: Rush-Henrietta’s quarterback completed 11 of 19 passes for 125 yards, a 54-yard touchdown pass to Nasir Patton, and an interception during a 49-21 loss at McQuaid.
Darius Poles: UPrep’s receiver had nine receptions for 144 yards and three touchdowns during a 52-20 win over Fairport. Tyrell Simmons also caught a touchdown.
Robert Poles-Harrison: Rush-Henrietta’s running back scored two touchdowns on 13 carries for 54 yards during a 40-21 loss at McQuaid. Evan Brock added 82 rushing yards.
Jackson Rucker: Fairport’s junior quarterback completed 11 of 17 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown during a 52-20 loss at UPrep.
Dominic Sansone: McQuaid’s kicker converted all 7 PATs during a 49-21 win over Rush-Henrietta.

Section V Class A1 Quarterfinals: Top players, performances Friday
Jeff Broadnax: Hilton senior running back scored a touchdown as he gained 114 yards on 17 carries during a 45-14 win over Gates Chili.
Drew Hilfiker: Webster Schroeder’s junior quarterback completed 12 of 15 passes for 150 yards and touchdown passes to Kaleb Juliano, Alex Thomann, Justin Maier and Torance Washington during a 49-0 win over Greece Olympia/Odyssey.
Daniel Johnson: Brighton’s senior had six receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown offensively, and had eight tackles, one for a loss, and returned an interception 25 yards for a touchdown during a 27-9 win over Webster Thomas.
Luke Lockhart: Hilton junior receiver/defensive back caught a pass for a touchdown, finished with two receptions for 87 yards and made six tackles as the Cadets defeated Gates Chili 45-14.
Dom Mancuso: Returned an interception for a touchdown during Webster Schroeder’s 49-0 win over Greece Olympia/Odyssey.
Tyler Martinovich: Brighton’s junior quarterback completed 10 of 18 passes, 226 yards three touchdowns — Thomas Welker and John Ahrens each caught one — and an interception during a 27-9 win over Webster Thomas.

Section V Class A2 Quarterfinals: Top players, performances
Yusuf Abdi: East/WOIS’s sophomore kicker made a 35-yard field goal and converted 5-of-7 PATs during a 50-8 Class A2 win over Wilson/Early College.
Sherman Carson: Eastridge senior carried six times for 172 yards, including two touchdowns, and caught six passes for 69 yards as the Lancers defeated Greece Athena 50-48.
Tysheed Crockton: The Canandaigua senior had just two touches but both were TDs, a 77-yard run and a 50-yard catch-and-run in a 34-8 home playoff win over Greece Arcadia.
Tyrone Fisher: East High/World of Inquiry junior defensive back intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and made seven tackles to help the Eagles defeat Wilson/Early College.
Jaylen Hardeman: Wilson/Early College’s senior quarterback threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Davion Lamar Singleton during a 50-8 Class A2 quarterfinal loss at East/WOIS.
Zymier Jackson: East High/World of Inquiry quarterback completed 11 of 20 throws for two touchdowns — to Ervin Wiggins and Kelvin Shepard — and 164 yards during a 50-8 win over Wilson/Early College.
Dashaun McClemmon: The Greece Arcadia junior rushed for 153 yards on 30 attempts in a 34-8 road loss to Canandaigua in the Class A2 playoff opener.
Loyall Mouzon: Eastridge junior receiver/defensive back threw a key 15-yard touchdown pass, made nine receptions for 105 yards with a touchdown, intercepted a pass and made seven tackles during a 50-48 win at Greece Athena.
Nate Parker: Brockport junior running back/linebacker scored two touchdowns as he caught seven passes for 117 yards, intercepted a pass and recovered fumble to help the Blue Devils win at Irondequoit 34-21.
Amere Rodgers: Eastridge junior had a touchdown run among 21 carries for 96 yards and a 15-yard touchdown reception on a trick play by the Lancers, 50-48 winners at Greece Athena.
Brennen Russo: Eastridge junior quarterback threw two touchdown passes as he completed 16 of 24 attempts for 207 yards during the team’s 50-48 win at Greece Athena.
Landon Scott: Brockport sophomore quarterback threw three passes for touchdowns as he completed 10 of 21 attempts for 189 yards during a 34-21 win for the Blue Devils at Irondequoit.
Edwin Spencer: East High/World of Inquiry senior linebacker forced two fumbles and made nine tackles and sophomore linebacker Anthony Hampton made 10 tackles during a 50-8 win for East High/World of Inquiry over Wilson/Early College.
Drew Williameee: The Canandaigua sophomore quarterback threw just four passes and completed just two, but both went for TDs of 64 and 77 yards in a 34-8 home playoff opening win over Greece Arcadia.

Section V Class B Quarterfinals: Top players, performances Friday
Aiden Anderson: Batavia’s running back scored rushing touchdowns of 57 and 27 yards during a 35-0 win over Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton.
Patrick Donahoe: Honeoye Falls-Lima’s running back had a rushing and receiving touchdown during a 48-22 win over Palmyra-Macedon. Conor Finn and Ben Cook also had rushing scores.
Cole Grazioplene: Batavia’s junior receiver caught touchdown receptions of 63 and 32 yards during a 35-0 win over Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton.
Jack Kearney: Had 14 carries for 94 yards and a touchdown during Livonia’s 44-6 win over Wayne.
Ja’Vin McFollins: Batavia’s senior quarterback threw three touchdowns during a 35-0 win over Dansville/Wayland-Cohocton.
Matt Meacham: Honeoye Falls-Lima’s junior quarterback threw four touchdown passes — to Donnell Hall, Patrick Donahoe, Andrew Wanzenried and Colt Miller — during a 48-22 win over Palmyra-Macedon.

Miles Caviness: East Rochester/Gananda’s receiver had two receptions for 44 yards and a touchdown during a 38-0 win over Lyons.
Brayden Dohse: East Rochester/Gananda’s quarterback completed 7 of 15 passes for 109 yards, two touchdowns and an interception during a 38-0 win over Lyons.
Manny Sepulveda: East Rochester/Gananda’s senior became Section V’s all-time receptions leader after catching five passes for 65 yards and a touchdown during a 38-0 win over Lyons.
Cadearrell Sneed Jr.: East Rochester/Gananda’s running back had 10 carries for 117 yards and three touchdowns during a 38-0 win over Lyons.
Section V Class D Quarterfinals: Top players, performances Friday
Kaden Lyons: Alexander senior linebacker helped the Trojans to a fifth shutout in eight games with nine tackles during a 33-0 victory over Clyde-Savannah.
Kadin Peete: York/Pavilion senior running back/defensive back had a 72-yard pass reception for a touchdown, a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown and 133 yards on 16 carries to lead his team to a 40-30 win over Batavia Notre Dame.
Brennan Royce: York/Pavilion junior linebacker recovered a fumble, had a sack and seven tackles and senior defensive lineman Maverick Coffey made 10 tackles during the team’s 40-30 win over Batavia Notre Dame.
Maddox Timothy: York/Pavilion senior quarterback completed 10 of 16 passes for 182 yards with a touchdown during the team’s 40-30 win over Batavia Notre Dame.
Ricky Townley: Alexander senior strong safety made eight tackles and senior linebacker Cole Dean recovered a fumble to help the Trojans shutout Clyde-Savannah 33-0.
Trent Woods: Alexander junior quarterback threw three touchdown passes during the team’s 33-0 win over Clyde-Savannah.
Section V Class A2
No. 1 East/WOIS 50, No. 8 Wilson/Early College 8
The Eagles (9-0) soared into the semifinals thanks to Amari Young’s 138-yard, three-touchdown rushing performance.
East/WOIS co-coaches James Vann and Steve Flagler, whose Eagles will host No. 5 Brockport (5-4) next week, were proud of how effective their offense, defense and special teams performed Friday night against Wilson/Early College (1-8).
“When you get a group that buys into what you’re preaching, they’ve done everything we’ve ever asked of them, and they just work, don’t complain and stay hungry,” Flagler said.
Quarterback Zymier Jackson threw a pair of touchdowns, and Anthony Diaz scored on offense. Kicker Yusuf Abdi contributed eight points and made a 35-yard field goal. Defensively, while Tyrone Fisher recovered a fumble and caught an interception, Edwin Spencer and Anthony Hampton combined for 19 tackles.Kicker Yusuf Abdi showed up again with a 35-yard field goal and five PATs.
“We just wanted to do what we’ve been doing all year,” Vann said. “Guys flying to the football, making good blocks, and that’s what we did. We just have to lock in next week. We’re about to play a good opponent.”
While East/WOIS moves on, the loss marked Wilson/Early College coach Greg Mortier’s final game after spending the last 22 years with the Wildcats. The 2017 All-Greater Rochester Coach of the Year guided Wilson to the Section V Class A title that same year, but he’s most proud of his program’s graduation rate and what his former athletes grow to become beyond high school.
Wilson/Early College dumped a cooler of cold water on Mortier to celebrate his final game.
“Obviously the championships and things like that are fun, but the main thing is the relationships with the kids and what they become down the line,” Mortier said.
Brockport 34, Irondequoit 21
Brockport’s three-game winning streak has the Blue Devils in a sectional semifinal for the first time since 2017.
The No. 5 seed Blue Devils (5-4) take on No. 1 East High/World of Inquiry (9-0) in the next round.
“The Spencerport win was huge for us. The (first) Greece Athena win (before the streak) was huge for us,” Brockport coach Scott Nugent said. “The kids are coming around. They are very coachable.
“We’re young, what do we have 4 seniors. But they are great kids, they are eager to win, eager to learn. We’re a totally different team than the first week, when we played East.”
Brockport defensive players Tyler Judd, Ryan Miller, Nate Parker and Brayden Spencer each intercepted a pass at Irondequoit.
The Eagles (4-5), which defeated Brockport 33-8 at Irondequoit during the regular season, led 21-7 after a scoring a touchdown on their first possession of the second half. The Blue Devils then went on a scoring run that launched Brockport into the semifinals.
Eastridge 50, Greece Athena 48
Austin DiFiore, a senior, kicked a 19-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to move the No. 6 seed Lancers (4-5) past No. 3 Greece Athena (5-4).
When DiFiore first lined up for the game-winning play, he missed the kick, but Greece Athena had called a time-out. DiFiore missed a second try but received another, because the Trojans had too many men on the field.
That put the ball on the Athena 4-yard line. An offsides penalty against Athena moved the ball to the 2-yard line, where DiFiore connected for the second time ever as a varsity player.
“It was back and forth, it was incredible,” Eastridge coach Jasson Jobson said. “They had one-play touchdown drives, we had one-play touchdown drives. They had 4th-and-goal touchdowns, we had 4th-and-goal touchdowns.”
The score was 35-35 at halftime.
Athena scored a touchdown with 3:52 remaining to take a 48-41 lead. A missed conversion kick kept Athena’s lead at seven points.
Eastridge scored on its next drive, when the Lancers ran a reverse and had Loyall Mouzon throw a pass to Amir Rogers, who came out of the backfield after making the catch and made it to the end zone 15 yards away with 1:25 remaining.
The score remained 48-47 however, because Athena’s defense stuffed Eastridge’s 2-point conversion attempt.
The Lancers, down by a point, tried an onside kick that was recovered by the Trojans. An offsides penalty against Athena gave Eastridge another chance, and this time DiFiore recovered for the Lancers. Eastridge faced 4th-and-10 near midfield when junior Cordell Young made it to the Athena 9 during a pass play.
Three plays later, DiFiore came on to the field to kick again.
Canandaigua 34, Greece Arcadia 8
Tysheed Crockton said the focus for Canandaigua was to come out and “handle business.” The Braves opened shop right on time, getting a 75-yard return on the opening kickoff from Keegan Jackson en route to the convincing playoff win at Braves Field.
The Braves (7-2) advance to the Class A2 semifinals, where they will host No. 6 Eastridge (4-5), a surprising 50-48 winner over No. 3 Greece Athena (5-4), also on Friday. The semifinal game is at Canandaigua on Friday, Nov. 4.
Jackson’s return was nice, but the Braves are still looking for better starts on offense after losing a fumble on their first possession and punting away on their second. It wasn’t until the second quarter that CA got on track with a 77-yard TD run from Crockton, a 45-yard run from Tre’mell Coleman and a 50-yard catch-and-run from Crockton.
“I feel like there was a lot of confidence not only in ourselves but in each other,” said Crockton. “We trusted the guys around us to make plays and if the guys around me weren’t blocking, I wouldn’t be able to do the stuff I do.”
The Braves added a 64-yard pass play from Drew Williamee to Jude York for a 34-0 lead with 5:51 left in the third quarter before Tamar Casper got Arcadia (1-8) on the board late in the fourth with a 51-yard run.
Dashaun McClemmon was the bright spot for the Titans with 153 rushing yards, 51 of which came on a play in the second quarter with Arcadia on its own 11.
“They have some good players and they’re going to make plays but we can’t give up the 50-yard play after we pin them down there,” Canandaigua coach Jeff Welch said. “And as we move on in the tournament, those will cost us.”
Still, Welch is pleased to move on as the Braves pursue of fourth straight Section V title.
“I thought we progressed, which is what we try to do each week,” he said. “But it’s the teams that can run the football and the ones that can stop the run are the ones that are going to be the most successful.”
