BATAVIA — Retired Educators of New York/Western Zone has announced its latest round of grant recipients.
The organization sponsors awards for teachers in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, and Niagara counties. Grant recipients were announced and awarded the $500 President’s Award for each of these projects.
Erin Griggs and Michelle Matthews, co-winners at Alden Intermediate School, have been awarded a $500 grant for a uniquely creative classroom-related activity they submitted to Western Zone. Their project is entitled “Struggling Reader Book Sets” and is designed to enhance and support student learning.
The project will revolve around a series of books geared to the needs of readers in the special education program. The project encompasses special education students in grades 3,4, and 5.
The second Western Zone President’s Award was presented to Pamela Brown at Middle Early College High School in Buffalo.
For this grant the project must describe a planned activity involving a student performance before an audience. The winning project is entitled “The History of Step”.
The intent of this project is to establish a student directed drill team during Black History Month. In addition to the physical performance students will spend time exploring the history of Step and include this as a presentation to an audience, providing them with cultural knowledge and background.
Retired Educators of New York/Western Zone has more than 2,500 members.
