Literary characters such as Robin Hood and Jean Valjean will take the stage at Batavia High School during the 2022-23 season of the Drama and Production Club.
The first production, “The Trials of Robin Hood,” is scheduled Dec. 2 to 4.
In the comedy by Will Averill, King Richard has returned from the Crusades and must try and figure out what happened in his kingdom during his absence – it Robin Hood an outlaw, a hero, a lovelorn sap or just plain mean?
The story is told from the perspectives of Robin Hood, Maid Marian, and Prince John. The tale combines three stories into one – and with three different endings, leaving it up to the audience to decide which one is true.
Next spring, students are planning to bring a long-running Broadway hit to the stage. “Les Miserables School Edition,” a version of the Broadway production adapted for schools, is scheduled March 3 to 5.
Set in 19th century France, Jan Valjean is released from years of unjust imprisonment, but finds nothing in store for him but mistrust and mistreatment. He breaks his parole in hopes of starting a new life, initiating a lifelong struggle for redemption as he is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert, who refuses to believe Valjean can change his ways. Finally, during the Paris student uprising of 1832, Javert must confront his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves that of the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean’s adopted daughter.”
The musical by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg is based on the novel by Victor Hugo and adapted by Cameron Mackintosh.

The Batavia High School Drama & Production Club is also participating in the Rochester Broadway Theater League’s “Stars of Tomorrow,” a program that celebrates the high school musical. RBTL adjudicators attend productions, provide feedback on the shows, and select awards that are presented in a Tony Awards-style show at the end of the school year.
